Day 4 ~ Driving, Driving, and More Driving
An early morning today.... after a wonderful night's rest in a real home, and a hearty breakfast from Michele's aunt, we got on the road asap so we could get to the next hotel, another Drury, by dinner time...Drury is now my favorite place to stay!
We had a long, long, loooooonnnggg boring drive through the state of Kansas today. Nine hours of straight, flat nothingness. There were grasses and a couple trees, but the road just went on and on and on and on.....
About halfway through Kansas, we found a Kroger sister store and bought some groceries, then found a nearby park to picnic for lunch. It's not a complete day without some baskets, so the kids got out their balls and started shooting. It was a great way to move after sitting so long!
Finally crossed into Colorado and gained another hour of time as we moved to mountain time. Soon after, we started to see some rolling hills, and then another hour later we got our first sight of the Rocky Mountains! We also spotted our first wild pronghorn, but I wasn't quick enough with the camera. Along the way, we passed hundreds of wind turbines, saw a license plate from an Oklahoma Indian tribe, and now we have a view of Pike’s Peak from our hotel window! Our elevation climbed from 800 ft above sea level on Kansas City to over 6000 ft in Colorado Springs. It's hard to believe that long, dull drive was taking us up, up, up! We encountered a small bit of rain and drizzle, but overall the drive was sunny and warm. We have been so blessed with the weather so far!
